Heaven on Earth

One of my favorite memories of B happened when we were in New York City over Christmas. We were standing in a long line at Starbucks when “Feliz Navidad” came over the sound system. Even in public we acted like silly kids, and so when he started singing the song, it was my cue to sing and dance a little too. Within about 5 seconds, the baristas were dancing around and singing as they were making coffees. Then suddenly, B threw his hands into the air and yelled out, “Everybody!” And right there in the middle of New York City, a place with a reputation for being impersonal and cold in the eyes of many Southerners, almost everyone in a busy Starbucks joined in to sing “Feliz Navidad.” It was a scene fit for a movie. The whole thing probably lasted only 30 seconds, but there was a camaraderie among strangers in those seconds. For a brief moment we were all a part of the same joyous spirit, and it seemed like a little glimpse of heaven on earth.

  1. What an awesome moment and memory to have. I bet you gave the others in the shop who sung along their own memory. It’s not every day that people let their guard down like that, especially in a big city.

  2. It’s always the little things, isn’t it? The wink of an eye, a spontaneous outpouring-however brief; these are the things we remember and always burn brightest in our memories.
