Wake Up

Wake Up
By Angie Vestal

She woke up at forty
From a life in a daze
And could find little purpose
In trudging the maze.

Trapped, insecure,
So close to the brink,
She soon quit her job
And she started to drink.

Prayer, meditation, drugs
To clear her head,
But nothing worked,
So she went back to bed…

She woke up at fifty
And nothing had changed,
Cept the kids were now older,
The house rearranged.

The life she was living
Didn’t seem very real
And she wanted to care,
But she just couldn’t feel…

She woke up at sixty,
And feeling much older,
She thought very briefly,
She’d try to be bolder.

But when the fog started rolling
Back in, as it does
She gave up her bravery
Again for her buzz…

She woke up at seventy,
Sticky stuff in her hair,
She wanted to leave,
But was tied to her chair.

She thought for a moment
About being a child
And what it was like
To be hopeful and wild.

She thought she’d be different
If she could live it again,
But the thoughts were too much
So she let it all end…

She woke up at forty
From a life in a daze
And could find little purpose
In trudging the maze.

Trapped, insecure,
So close to the brink,
She took a month off
And she started to think.

She thought of the joy
Of being a child,
Remembering times
Living, hopeful, and wild.

She dug in the dirt,
She danced in the sun,
She gave up her demons,
And she started to run…

Hebrews 12:1 …Let us run with perseverance the race God has set before us…
